Smartphone photography has become a standard way of recording ocular findings for documentation, expert opinion, academics, teleophthalmology and patient education. Dr Prithvi Chandrakanth, Retina Fellow, AEH – Coimbatore devised a novel imaging method by combining used/ expired intraocular lens (IOL) glued to the smartphone camera thereby providing brilliant anterior segment photographs of the eye. Everybody carries a phone and we at Aravind receive many expired IOLs or IOLs with broken haptics which are not suitable for intraocular implantation. This cost-effective innovation enables us to take photos of great clarity in camps and vision centres.
