The Perkins Tonometer is a portable hand-held applanation tonometer used to measure Intraocular Pressure (IOP) for evaluation of glaucoma. It uses a doubling prism mounted on a hard plastic ‘U’ shaped holder rim. Thus, chance of contact biprism damage while mounting on the hard plastic ‘U’ shaped holder is more due to increased compressive stress. Our Instrument department came up with a cost-effective and safe method to tackle this issue. A flexible, plastic ‘U’ shaped holder is introduced for this purpose which has proven to be safe while mounting the biprism and also during its use. It prevents biprism damage because of its ability to flex and sustain pressure. Secondly, it is also cost effective as compared to the hard plastic prism holder. It just costs INR 300. Thirdly, it can be easily replaced and used effectively in any hand-held tonometer model.
