Irrigation and aspiration is a crucial step in small incision cataract surgery. The simcoe cannula used for the same comes with a cannula and a tube which connects it to the syringe. The tube has a short life and replacing the entire unit costs around INR 700. AECS has come up with a simple solution for this issue. A similar tube made of silicon is bought and cut into appropriate size which serves the same purpose. Replacing this after wear and tear is much easier and helps in hassle free sterilisation too. The cost of 10 meter tube is around INR 400 and 150 short tubes for the unit can be prepared from this. This frugal and innovative solution suggested originally by AEH – Madurai, is being used in all our hospitals.
