Implementing barcode scanners for scanning lens lot numbers during cataract surgery cases within each operating theatre (OT) has yielded positive results. The project aimed to encode lens model numbers via barcodes in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) rather than manual entry. This initiative successfully reduced time consumption and minimised typo errors associated with entering manually.

To execute this process, a 2-dimensional barcode scanner was purchased and tested in trial mode, demonstrating its efficacy. Subsequently, the scanner was presented to the senior management team, and upon approval, it was permanently stationed in the OT for scanning lens model numbers. A training session was conducted with the operating theatre staff to familiarise them with the scanners, and the feedback received was overwhelmingly positive. Presently, three scanners are installed for operational use.

Presently, Aurolab lenses are not scanned through this device. Notably, 80% of the lenses used in Aravind-Coimbatore are Aurolab lenses. However, the other lenses, such as Alcon, Hoya, Carl, and Zeiss are successfully scanned. Nevertheless, the implementation of barcode scanners has significantly improved efficiency and accuracy in recording lens model numbers during cataract surgery cases.
